26 FEBRUARY 2018 – Exodus 20:1-17 (TLB)

Scripture

Then God issued this edict:

“I am Jehovah your God who liberated you from your slavery in Egypt.

“You may worship no other god than me.

“You shall not make yourselves any idols: no images of animals, birds, or fish.

“You shall not use the name of Jehovah your God irreverently, nor use it to swear to a falsehood. You will not escape punishment if you do.

“Remember to observe the Sabbath as a holy day.

12 “Honor your father and mother, that you may have a long, good life in the land the Lord your God will give you.

13 “You must not murder.

14 “You must not commit adultery.

15 “You must not steal.

16 “You must not lie.[c]

17 “You must not be envious of your neighbor’s house, or want to sleep with his wife, or want to own his slaves, oxen, donkeys, or anything else he has.”

Reflection

These are the 10 Commandments. Some have pointed out that the first five speak to our relationship with God and the second five our relationship with each other. This order is an indication of a larger truth; when we are aligned with God we are empowered to be in right relationship with each other. I heard a comedian say once that of all the commandments he would like to see removed it would be the last one, “Do not envy”. His reason was that much of the world’s economy relies on our envying the things that others have; without envy, he said, we could face economic ruin! He was joking of course, or was he? (Ps. Dale).

  • What does this passage tell us about God and people?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • What is one way you can apply this truth to your life today?
  • Who can you encourage with this story/message?

Prayer

Pray that many people will be drawn to the Savior in Shanghai during Lent and Easter Celebration.
