30 April 2019 – Mark 9:30-32 (NIV)

Scripture

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

Reflection

“Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples.” V.30b,31a

When I read this passage, it makes me think of retreats/conferences. I find incredible value from retreats and conferences, especially during the extended times that are set aside to focus on God and His Word. Of course, not everyone has opportunities to go on retreats to carve time out to intentionally focus on reading the Bible and spend time with God. However, one can still be equally intentional about wanting to spend time with God in your daily life.

“(…) The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him and after three days he will rise.” V.31

In this verse, we see Jesus’ disciples still haven’t grasped the meaning of what He was saying. Evan after the fact that Jesus intentionally discipled them. I wonder why they were afraid to not ask Jesus more about his statement. After all, they’ve been together for more than three years. Surely they have a relationship where they can ask Him anything, or at least one would think. Or perhaps it was the fear of knowing what they expected and what ended up happening was far from what they thought it would be?

Similarly, many times in our lives we can relate with the disciples. But rather let our eyes be on Jesus; and even though what we hoped and expected is not exactly the outcome we wanted, we would still choose to trust in God (Su).
