31 December 2019 -Romans 1:1-4 (NIV)

Scripture

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reflection

In verse 1 we read how Paul identified himself first as a servant of Christ Jesus. The word ‘servant’ means slave, a person owned by another. Paul used this title gladly (Gal. 1:10; Titus 1:1), and in the Old Testament this picture of a slave reveals someone who in love binds himself to his master for life (Ex. 21:2–6).

Like Paul, we are also a servant aka a slave of Jesus Christ and when you are a slave to someone, the master owns every aspect of the slave’s life. The master gets to tell the slave how to live and what to do. In the same way, since we are servants of Christ, He gets to tell us how we should live our lives and what we should do and shouldn’t do. But unlike a human master, Jesus acts purely out of a place of love for us and only wants the best for us. Do you believe that?

Thoughts for the day

  • Are you allowing Christ to be the master over your entire life?
  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Take time to pray Psalm 96. Allow it to shape prayers of thanksgiving as you are reminded of who God is.
