30 November 2020 – Isaiah 64:4 (NIV)
Scripture
Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
Reflection
The name ‘Isaiah’ means ‘Yahweh is salvation’ which is evident in the overall narrative of the book of Isaiah. As you read the book one notices besides pointing out the shortcomings of the people, the prophet noted that God always has a remnant of believers through whom He works. Isaiah also spoke more than any other prophet of the great kingdom into which Israel would enter at the Second Advent of the Messiah. The prophet also discussed the depths of Israel’s sin and the heights of God’s glory and His coming kingdom.
It is with this bit of background that we read today’s verse into the overarching narrative of God making a way for all peoples through Israel in the person of Jesus Christ. Isaiah is proclaiming there was no God before Him and there will be no God after Him that will do what he is planning to do (referring to the first coming of Jesus Christ and the work on the cross).
Isaiah also speaks of the second coming of Jesus, when He (Jesus) will come and restore and make all things new. We have hope in God’s promises that the brokenness this world brings, will be put right when Jesus will come again. May this eternal hope of a new promised creation sustain you during these uncertain times.

Prayer
Welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit. You can pray, “Come Holy Spirit”. Meditate on the Word of God from Psalm 27:1, The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?
