30 December 2020 – Galatians 5:22-23‬‬‬‬‬‬ (NIV)

Scripture

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Reflection

In today’s verses, we witness a similar theme being echoed as in yesterday’s devo namely the spiritual dichotomy Paul found within himself. In Galatians 5:17 we read ‘17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

And to be led by the Spirit it means we need to be in step with the Spirit and our lives should exhibit the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit. It is important to observe that the fruit here described is not produced by a believer, but by the Holy Spirit working through a Christian who is in vital union with Christ (John 15:1–8).

Reflect on the nine qualities of the fruit of the Spirit and ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal which of the nine you need to lay down at the cross to live a life that reflects a Christlike image.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Invite the Holy Spirit to be present as you spend a moment in silence; Give thanks for one thing that you’re grateful for right now, and use it to reflect on the goodness of God; Bring to God one thing that’s on your mind right now, and lift it before Him; Devote the remainder of your day to Jesus.
