Scripture

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Reflection

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive its king;

let ev’ry heart prepare him room,

and heav’n and nature sing,

and heav’n and nature sing,

and heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing.

Jesus coming to the world was marked by acts of faith, humility and obedience, not just his own, but from those around Him too. Today we are reminded of how God fulfilled the prophesy written on Isaiah 7:14:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

As we celebrate Christ’s birth and wait for Christ’s return, let us take on the same attitude of Mary as we wait: in faith, humility and obedience. He has fulfilled His promises, and He will do it again!

“Joy does not come from positive predictions about the state of the world. It does not depend on the ups and downs of the circumstances of our lives. Joy is based in the spiritual knowledge that, while the world in which we live in is shrouded in darkness, God has overcome the world.” – Henri Nouwen
