Scripture
9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father, David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Reflection
We celebrated Holy Week not that long ago; these verses are often quoted and repeated, especially as we celebrate Palm Sunday.
“Hosanna” – Save us!
With Jesus’ triumphant entrance the people recognized the potential impact of what was about to happen. The word Hosanna carries a sense of awe, surrender and hope. Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection were part of the victory on the Cross. In the midst of celebration and the recognition of His Kingdom being established we shall not forget the cost of true discipleship. Following Jesus involves hardships, suffering and persecution, and for some even death (if not a literal physical death, a more constant dying-to-ourselves kind of death), but it also involves Love, Grace, Hope and a relationship with a God who will never leave us or forsake us.
“Hosanna, Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
Hosanna, Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me
Break my heart for what breaks yours
Everything I am for your kingdom’s cause
As I walk from earth into eternity”
