Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit
In every country, to become a citizen, there are conditions or requirements to meet. Similarly to become a citizen of the Kingdom of God, there is a condition to meet, namely to be born again or to be born from above.
In today’s verse, Jesus responds to the question of a Jewish leader named Nicodemus. His question was about being born again. Jesus’s response was: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
Going to church, serving at church, giving offerings and giving to the poor, are all very important things and we should keep on doing them. However all these things cannot make someone enter the kingdom of God. Someone can only enter or become a citizen of God’s kingdom by being born again which is being born of water and the Spirit. The new birth comes into action when someone repents of sin and self-life and believes in Jesus Christ or puts one’s faith in Jesus Christ to be saved (Mark 1:15).
As Christians or children of God, we are part of God’s kingdom. Being part of God’s kingdom is a privilege of an inestimable value. We benefit from an abundance of blessings, such as eternal life. We should continually pray for all those who are not yet part of God’s kingdom, to receive the grace to be born again, so to also become citizen of God’s kingdom like us.
