15 January 2021 – Mark 1:10-11 (NIV)

Scripture

10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Reflection

Being sinless, Jesus went to John specifically asking to be baptized, as he knew that this was the way for him to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15), in an act of humbling himself as a man and submitting his will to his Father. Immediately after, God affirmed Jesus as His Son. This was a powerful, landmark moment, where every prophecy about the Messiah is fulfilled, including what John claimed about The One, who has now come. But what is more, can you sense the love expressed in the Father’s voice to the Son? Do you know God the Father says the same thing to every person who accept His Son? He has said that to you when you believed in the Lord Jesus. If you’ve forgotten that moment, take some time to think back on that day: “[Your name], you are my son/daughter, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage
  • How will you respond to God’s love for you?

Prayer

Think of another person in your life who needs God to move in their situation. Ask for God to be at work. Approach the Lord of all with boldness today, knowing that he delights in you, and those you love.
