Scripture
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.
Reflection
In the preceding verse Joseph brought a bad report to his father about his brothers, however as the chief shepherd, it was his duty to report any scandalous conduct, thus not resulting in gossip. This verse also indicates at an age of 17, Joseph was governing over his older brothers. To add to his brothers’ jealousy, Benjamin being younger was more the son of ‘Israel’s old age’ and consequently on that ground might have been expected to be the favorite, yet it was Joseph who received a coat of many colours, which indicates a dress of distinction. Coupled with his dream where his brothers will bow down before him, resulted in his brothers’ hatred towards him. Yet in all of this, the Bible doesn’t indicate Joseph responded with a similiar attitude (Con).
