Scripture

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

Reflection

The importance of witnessing the ascension of Jesus into heaven cannot be overstated. First, the witness of Jesus’ ascension allows us to boldly claim that He is on the throne of heaven.  And second, it allows us to understand the nature of the Kingdom, which is not an earthly one, but a heavenly one.  I’d like to focus on the second point today and it’s implications.

The nature of the kingdom is heavenly.  That means that it is not bound by the laws of the earth or material universe.  As if Jesus’ miracles and resurrection did not already, the ascension of Jesus itself breaks all rules of gravity and the science that we know of.  To this day, no man has flown into the sky without the help of some technological science.  The witnessing of Jesus’ final moments with the disciples as he ascended into heaven declared without a doubt his divineness and rule over all.  It also means that the kingdom that Jesus declared is already here, the same kingdom we pray for to expand in the Lord’s prayer, the kingdom that He is sitting on the throne of is not merely one of this mortal world but both!  Maybe, if this kingdom is already here we too can experience the amazing things that come with being in His kingdom.  Things such as: healing of all kinds, compassion, love and restoration in both the capacities of material and spiritual.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Today, take a moment, wherever you are, to ASK God to move in your life: Share what’s on your heart, asking God to provide, protect and encourage you.
