27 MARCH 2018 -1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (ESV)
Scripture
Now I would remind you, brothers,of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
Reflection
“He (Jesus) was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.” Cephas is Peter. This reference to Peter and Jesus meeting privately after the resurrection is the only place where it occurs. The last time Peter and Jesus had seen each other was when Peter was denying Jesus and their eyes met across the courtyard. Since then, Peter had received the news of Jesus’ empty tomb; he ran with John to see for himself. He had wept bitterly after his denial and remained in the empty tomb to wonder what it meant. Did Peter have a sense even then that there would be a reckoning with Jesus concerning his denial. Whatever they talked about in the meeting described here, Peter was never the same. Jesus lovingly redeemed and restored his friend. Peter would lead the way when faith in Jesus would transition from something held by a band of 120 believers to thousands in the city of Jerusalem; he would also open the door to Jesus for the entire world. That’s coming next! (Ps. Dale).
