25 APRIL 2018 -1 Kings 3:7-9 (NIV)

Scripture

“Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

Reflection

Solomon is asked a question and gives the correct answer, the predictable answer. God asks, “What do you want?” Solomon answers, “I ask for wisdom” The ironic bit is that Solomon at the same time he is asking for wisdom is making a very unwise and dangerous choice; he has made a political alliance with Egypt by marrying the daughter of Pharaoh. In time these marriages of political convenience (and there will be many) will open the door to false worship and a lack of trust in God. For all of Solomon’s wisdom, time will prove that he could not apply it to his own life. What good is it if we gain the whole world but lose our soul? (Ps. Dale).
