8 MAY 2018 -Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)

Scripture

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Reflection

Jesus was a known as a teacher, in fact it was a title people would use in addressing him; a title he was comfortable with. (Matthew 8:19) But no teacher, no contemporary of Jesus, would ever have promised rest to the weary as Jesus does. The yoke was carried on the shoulders and it was a symbol of submission and obedience. Jesus is not eliminating the need for submission and obedience, he is qualifying them in the light of his arrival. Rich and powerful people disdained humility, Jesus encouraged humility for everyone and identified with the lowly for whom money and privilege could not provide protection from the hardships of life. (Ps. Dale).
