10 January 2020 -Hebrews 4:8-9 (NIV)
Scripture
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;
Reflection
The meaning behind these two verses should be understood within the original author’s context. The author of Hebrews writes about a rest that is referred to as Jesus’ second coming. The readers of Hebrews were worried they might have missed the second coming of Jesus. But to put their minds at ease, the author employs a similar understanding of rest as found in the OT. In the OT the promised land that Joshua led the nation into, was considered as the place of rest. Thus, by alluding to the fact that, if that was the place of rest (referring to the promised land), why would God speak of another day of rest? Therefore, by making such a comparison, the author of Hebrews was silencing his reader’s worries and fears, by saying Jesus’ second coming has not occurred yet. They don’t need to be alarmed or afraid and that they can continue to persevere in their faith.
