30 October 2020 – Luke 14:26 (NIV)

Scripture

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.

Reflection

In verse 26, Jesus says that one must hate his own family and even his own life to be His disciple. However, to hate one’s family would have been a violation of the Law and since Jesus on several occasions cautioned others to satisfy the Law, He must not have meant here that one should literally hate his or her family. The stress here is on the priority of love (Matt. 10:37). One’s loyalty to Jesus must come before his loyalty to his family or even to life itself. Indeed, those who did follow Jesus against their families’ desires were probably thought of as hating their families. But Jesus speaks elsewhere in the New Testament of becoming part of God’s family when one puts his or her faith in Christ.
May these verses encourage us, even though how hard it is at times to be a disciple of Jesus, we are not alone. We have a community of believers who are there to support us, pray with us and encourage us along the way as we become more like Christ and as we go and make disciples.
