38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
Reflection
I have a confession to make…I like to watch American Idol and the plethora of spin-offs of that genre. Its funny to see the people who think they are good only to get blasted off the stage from the panel of judges and experts sitting there. Most contestants are ok to bad and wont make it. But every so often there is a contestant that will come in, sing and turn the heads of these expert judges. The truth is, it takes a lot to impress someone in something they are experts at.
And that is exactly the scenario that Jesus walks into. Here is this prophet walking onto the scene and telling the genuine expert fishermen what side of the boat to throw their net onto! Spiritual matters a prophet is good for, but fishing? If we’re being honest here, Peter, James and John did not have to listen or entertain a word that Jesus said here. But for their own good (or maybe it was just that bad of a day at sea?) they listened, acted and got to witness this miracle. They saw for themselves that this man Jesus even had mastery over nature and that this Jesus was more than a prophet or man. They immediately dropped their nets and followed him.
I love this about Jesus. He is willing to drop into our every day lives and show us He is master over everything; the things we are experts over to even the most mundane of tasks. Our job is to be willing to listen to his direction and guidance when we speaks.
