2 September 2021 – James 2:14 (NIV)

Scripture

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

Reflection

It may seem hard to imagine that there would be Christians who are so “heavenly minded that they are no earthly good”, those who want to sit around and talk about heaven while there are people in our community going to bed hungry and suffering from lack when we have plenty. Today’s generation of Christians seem to be more aware of the physical needs around us and less concerned with what we believe or even why we believe it. Perhaps if James were here today he might be cautioning us to not be so busy going about doing good things and miss the intimate relationship with Jesus with whom and by whom all things count.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in your current situation

Prayer

Think of anyone you know who is an essential worker and spend time praying for their specific needs. You could even message them and ask if they would like prayer for anything in particular. Pray for energy and perseverance for essential workers as they continue to serve in their contexts.
