29 April 2019 – Mark 9:9-13 (NIV)

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

Peter, James and John had just witnessed the transfiguration and hearing the voice coming from the clouds declaring: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

But why is it that Jesus tells them not to tell anyone until He had risen from the dead? Some commentaries say that until then they would not fully understand what they had just seen. In the same way, we need to first receive the revelation of His Word and Truth before we can share it with others. How powerful is the witness of those who have experienced Him!

Intrigued, the 3 disciples kept on wonderingabout Jesus’ words. As they kept on asking Jesus questions, Jesus reveals that Elijah has come (he was talking about John the Baptist, who came to prepare the way for Jesus- confronting people’s evil ways and preaching repentance). In a short period of time they would learn that what has been written would come to pass. Jesus would suffer much and be rejected.

May we not only read about Jesus, but receive the revelation of His Word and Truth in our own lives, so that we can be true witnesses of His Love and Grace (Su).
