22 June 2020 – 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)

Scripture

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Reflection

To better understand this passage we must first be reminded of the original purpose of the cross.  To be sentenced to a death upon the cross meant to be badly beaten and then be hung unto two crossing beams of wood with no support to hold you up except the nails that were driven through your hands into the beams. Frankly speaking, it was the cruelest form of torture.  So naturally to the world, the image of this form of death sentence invokes horror and of course foolishness to associate a “message” with such a thing.  But God, in only the way He can, used this instrument of death and turned it into the message that shows His ultimate power.  The power to save, the power to overcome, the power of Jesus blood and the power of His resurrection.  That’s how God works!  He sees what was meant for death and sorrow and changes what its original purpose was for into the greatest symbol of His glory.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Stop and pray for someone who is near to you right now, someone you can see.
