27 February 2020 -Jude 1:20-23 (NIV)

Scripture

20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Reflection

Yesterday we read how Jude was reminding his readers of what the apostles (Paul and Peter) had said about the apostates. In today’s verses Jude is reminding his readers to give attention to themselves (spiritually). The heart of Jude’s message in these 3 verses are to (1) build yourselves up in your most holy faith; (2) pray in the Holy Spirit; (3) keep yourselves in God’s love; and (4) wait for Christ’s return.

These four exhortations are a great reminder to anyone who finds themselves in a situation where one feels overwhelmed and like your drowning. It’s easy to forget to nurture ourselves spiritually during trying times, but similarly to Jude’s message to his readers, we should also hold fast to the same four exhortations when we struggle to make sense of what’s going on around us. When we hold fast to these four exhortations we will be able to navigate our way through the storms and come out the other way victorious.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Invite the Holy Spirit to show you something to rejoice over. Look beyond your current circumstances to the Lord of all Creation. Remember that you are fully, unconditionally loved. Take time to rejoice in the goodness of the God who has saved you.
