30 September 2019 -John 1:40-43 (NIV)

Scripture

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”

Reflection

This passage is amazing because you can go two ways with it. You can go the route where Jesus renames Simon to Peter, thus revealing Peter’s true character and destiny. Or you can go to the beginning of the passage that reveals Andrew’s first thing he did as a follower of Jesus which is to tell someone else, his brother Simon, that he had found the Messiah. Thats where I want to focus on today’s passage.

Serving at SCF, I love that I get to be around new Christians all the time. I see and admire their enthusiasm and fearlessness in sharing the Word. It encourages me to not grow stale and old as a long established Christian and reminds me continually of when I first met the Lord and my desire to share this news that was too good to be true. Hopefully, you have never lost this! My hope is that we will always remain a church that is excited and unashamed to share that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

When challenges come we can so easily forget where our identity comes from. Today take time to pause and be reminded of God’s love for you.
