Scripture

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

Reflection

This verse emphasizes an important component of being a Christ-follower, which is that we are not only meant to just listen and learn, but also to teach and apply. As a reminder, this is Paul’s second letter to Timothy – a young man whom Paul was encouraging to grow in his faith and take on the mantel of leadership. So, in this verse, Paul is encouraging Timothy to teach what he has been taught. That may sound simple, but how many Christ followers actually do that? Unfortunately, there is a common model in which Christians go to church, listen to the sermon, and then go on with life without much change. Instead, we are called to both be taught AND to teach. You may wonder “who can I teach?” It can family members (kids, spouses, siblings) or friends. And it does not even have to be formal, like a sermon. We can teach through conversation and sharing – “today I was having a hard time at work and was reminded of the message I had heard about frustration….” In fact, often times that type of personal, informal sharing can teach people a lot more than a Sunday sermon (but don’t tell Pastor Dale I said that!).

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Today, take a moment, wherever you are, to ASK God to move in your life: Share what’s on your heart, asking God to provide, protect and encourage you.
