3 February 2021 – Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV)
Scripture
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Reflection
Benson’s commentary describes this passage as “Both a pledge and a foretaste; of our inheritance, in heaven, until the redemption of the purchased possession — Till the church, which he has purchased with his own blood, shall be fully delivered from all sin and sorrow, and advanced to everlasting glory.” The seal of the Holy Spirit very clearly marks our declaration of Jesus as Lord of our lives presently and then further acts as a deposit within our lives that helps us toward holiness and refining our beings into more Christ-likeness (this process is called sanctification). Benson goes on further to say, “When this sealing of the Spirit is enjoyed in the most perfect manner, it seems to imply, 1st, A full impression of the image of God on a man’s soul; 2nd, A full assurance of his receiving all the promises, whether relating to time or eternity.” That is to say, we can have assurance of our standing as children of God being made in His image. And we need not wait to experience glimpses of eternity now because we have the Spirit of God within and upon us.
