4 February 2021 – Psalm 8:2 (NIV)

Scripture

Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

Reflection

Biblical language often uses the term children and infants to describe a person or people as one of humble nature. This is a person who would not be considered ‘mighty’, of great strength or even wealth. Though we all love an underdog story, the history of the world provides little evidence that such a person rises above. It is typically the strong, cunning and advantageous that make it to the top of the hill. And yet it is exactly the opposite of our assumptions that God declares the victors, the establishers, the silencers. According to the way of Yahweh, there is no greater stronghold than that of one built on the praises of the humble. For it is the humble that know their place as sons and daughters of a truly loving and protective God, whom allows rest under the shadow of His wings. The children of God know that it is not their might that silences the foe, but rather God the Father’s might that does.
