Scripture
12 Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own.
Reflection
Paul writes these words as he can very well recall the day he encountered Christ; when Christ “possessed” him and sent him on his way to take the good news about Jesus Christ to people who were not Jewish, in places where they had never heard of Jesus. In other words, Paul is going to keep moving forward, wanting the things and “taking hold” of the things for which Christ had taken hold of him. For Paul it was taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to Gentiles. For you and me it might be “taking hold” of a relationship in a way that Christ has taken hold of us. There is a lot to work with here; there is a lot of room to grow! (Ps. Dale).
