Scripture

your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Reflection

The first petition contained in the Lord’s Prayer is one that touches on the bigger picture of God’s story, namely for His Kingdom and will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. To ask for this is to realize that it hasn’t been established – yet. It’s to remember that there are things that need to be reconciled. It needs to conform to God’s will.

In 2 Corinthians 5: 17-20 it says:

“17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

As Christ’s followers, we are not only the ones that intercede for this to happen, but we join Christ as ambassadors for His Kingdom, to bring His will on earth as it is in Heaven.

“Jesus’s resurrection is the beginning of God’s new project not to snatch people away from earth to heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord’s Prayer is about.” N. T. Wright

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Invite the Holy Spirit to show you something to rejoice over. Look beyond your current circumstances to the Lord of all Creation. Remember that you are fully, unconditionally loved. Take time to rejoice in the goodness of the God who has saved you.
