During times of stress and change, good communication becomes even more important. As the Proverb says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (18:21)

The words we speak to each other are so powerful that they are compared to the “Tree of Life”, a rich image from the Bible that describes how God brings renewal, transformation and communion with Him.

“The soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4

Here are a few practical characteristics of “tree of life” giving words:

  1. They are honest

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted,

but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Proverbs 27:5-6

  1. Less is more

“Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.” Proverbs 11:12

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Proverbs 13:3

  1. They bring calm

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1

  1. They are “fitting to the situation”.

Words that are generally true can bring great delight when they are applied to a particular life situation

“A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word!” Proverbs 15:23

Speak well and enjoy life in the Son!
