22 August 2019 – Mathew 14:29-30 (NIV)

Scripture

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Reflection

Sometimes, when this story is told, it is Peter who is criticized for his lack of faith and yet he is the only one who called out to Jesus on this stormy night, “Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Peter had enough faith to suggest an invitation to walk on water; enough faith to trust Jesus for his rescue when began to sink but not enough to overcome the doubt in the resistance from the strong winds. Faith is like that, it will be tested . . . no test, no faith. Even if we sink, if we have the courage to trust in Jesus again, then our faith will grow and get stronger for the next time; but you have to get out of the boat!

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Wherever you are, take time to acknowledge God and trust in Him again. Give God your worries. Take a moment to give each thing you are worrying about back to God.
