5 December 2019 – Matthew 24:36, 42-44 (NIV)

Scripture

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Reflection

No one knows when Jesus is going to return. There is an implied warning here against those who might want to waste their time tracking down every silly speculation about something Jesus said is not known. Beware the temptation to waste hours of time on the internet when we can be “out there” doing the things Jesus told us to do when he was here the first time! Which might have something to do with being ready for his return, the point of the thief in the night story.

Thoughts for the day

  • What does this passage tell you about God or Jesus?
  • What does this passage tell you about humanity?
  • What do you feel God is telling you through this passage?
  • How can you apply this message in an area of your life that needs transformation?
  • Is there anyone you think should hear or will benefit from this message? Go and tell them.

Prayer

Wherever you are, take time to acknowledge God and trust in Him again. Give God your worries. Take a moment to give each thing you are worrying about back to God.
